Black Lights and Counterfeit Detection Products
The MoneyChecker is a reliable, economic, quick and accurate anti-counterfeit tool used by banks, financial institutions, retail and restaurant chains nationwide and abroad. The Industrial model is designed to verify the authenticity of U.S. currency. The Universal model is designed to verify the authenticity of U.S. currency and provides an additional UV lamp that allows authentication of many additional documents such as credit cards, travelers' checks, driver licenses, passports, visas and other ID's. The MoneyChecker identifies two covert security features: the denomination specific color-coded Security Thread with Micro-printing, and the Watermark. The U.S. denominations $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 printed after 1996 all contain these security features. The built-in template provides the correct location and color of the security thread when activated by ultraviolet light which is unique to each denomination.
What's the difference between the Industrial and the Universal model?
The Industrial MoneyChecker is less expensive than the Universal model due to the additional UV light in the hood of the Universal. That additional light is the only difference between the two models. The additional UV light is for the purpose of checking the flourescent security features on documents other than U.S. currency, such as: credit cards, driver licenses, travelers checks, passports, visas, company checks, etc.
What's wrong with Security Pens?
Pen markers used to check the authenticity of U.S. currency have an 83% failure rate, according to Senior Special Agent Johnson of the United States Secret Service Financial Crimes Unit in Washington D.C. These pen marks may indicate that an authentic bill is counterfeit or they may indicate that a counterfeit bill is authentic. If a bill has been exposed to certain chemicals found in soaps, bleach, battery acid, etc. then the results offered by these pen markers would be affected. The use of pen markers to validate currency authenticity carries some liability. Not only are you putting yourself and your business at risk of accepting counterfeit currency, but also you may falsely accuse and detain someone of using counterfeit currency when in fact it is authentic.
Corporal Alber Jeffcoat of the Savannah, Georgia Police Department has hosted over a hundred Fraud and Security Business Workshops and Seminars. According to him it is not uncommon for criminals to apply wax, grease, harispray, bleach, or to wash counterfeit bills to negate the benefits of the Pen Markers and to make the counterfeit bill appear real. Corporal Jeffcoat says, "The best and most accurate defense against incurring financial losses through the acceptance of counterfeit currency is simply an individual awareness and knowledge of how to recognize the bills integrated security features. In fact, a person really only needs to know just 3 of the more than 15 integrated security features of a bill...where the reflective ink is and how to check it, the watermark, and the security strip. If these 3 features are present and correct then the bill will be authentic. If one or more of these security features is missing or incorrect then the bill will be counterfeit." The MoneyChecker can quickly and easily check all three of these features without a doubt and with not more than a few minutes of user training.
MoneyChecker User Info
1. There have been new security features installed in the new money; color-shifting ink (green/black), micro-printing, fluorescence in existing security stirpe, different location of security stripe for each denomination and the watermark.
2. The Watermark and the Fluorescent stripe are the two most difficult to counterfeit security features on the new money.
3. The watermark face always matches the face in the middle of the bill.
4. At the point of sale it is very important that checking money take as little time as possible. There is no loss of time in using the MoneyChecker in comparrison with using a Pen or holding the bill up to the light. Also, the MoneyChecker is less antagonistic to the customer than holding a bill up to the light or marking it with a pen.
5. Compare to the "Counterfeit Pen". If you adopt the pen as your means of checking currency, the first problem is time consumption, locating the pen(pens tend to get lost or walk away), uncapping the pen, making the mark, looking for the reaction, capping the pen back up and putting it away. The next problem is reliability. The pen dries up rather quickly and they are expensive to replace.
6. Employee acceptance: No matter what you choose as a method of counterfeit curency detection, getting the employees to actually use it can be difficult. Many employees are unaware that the fluorescent stripe and the watermark face exist. There is a novelty effect among employees when you first install the MoneyChecker. You will get little to no resistance from employees. They'll use it. They'll think it's neat.
7. The deterrence factor: If there is a device next to your register and employees are checking currency, people in line will see that and they will be less likely to pass funny money to you. The establishment will become known by counterfeiters as one to avoid.
